The use of wireless communications is increasing. Citizens' concerns about potentially harmful effects of electromagnetic radiation are growing; the number of discussions and questions about the health effects of living near electricity facilities is increasing. Much scientific research has been conducted internationally on the possible health effects of living near high-voltage power lines. This has not allayed concerns. Also following recent discussions on the IARC's classification of mobile phones and on electro-sensitivity, it has become clear that there are still uncertainties regarding the actual health effects of electromagnetic fields. Reliable facts from research are needed to have a proper discussion on the subject.
Connecting character
Research into the biological effects of radiation and fields - also in the longer term - and into the differences in electro-sensitivity among the population can contribute to the safer design and construction of wireless equipment, the development of reliable regulations around this topic, and a factual basis for discussions on the subject. This topic requires a multidisciplinary approach including biologists, physicians, biophysicists and engineers; good input can also be provided from the social sciences. In addition, industry and government are stakeholders in the research results. The question fits with the policy spearhead 'Health and welfare of humans and animals'. In the Netherlands, the Knowledge Platform Electromagnetic Fields & Health has a good picture of the current knowledge and outstanding questions on this topic. The Knowledge Platform brings together the relevant institutions and organisations that have front-line contact with citizens and employees on this topic.
