The Dutch Research Agenda

What are the consequences of chronic disorders, stress, and disabilities and what is the best way to deal with them?

The consequences of chronic mental and/or physical conditions, stress and disabilities, such as stress in chronically ill people, somatically unexplained complaints, and intellectual disabilities, are great. This applies to both individuals and society. The question of how patients, healthcare providers and society can deal with this in the best possible way is therefore important. Not only from the point of view of promoting patients' health and well-being, but also from the point of view of social and economic impact. As about one in four Dutch people now suffer from a chronic condition, this concerns a question that can have a lot of impact.

Connecting character

Research on chronic conditions, stress and disability has important implications for mental and physical healthcare, and for social, economic and technological developments. The large number of questions submitted on this topic include: Mapping the mental and physical consequences for quality of life and social participation
Causal, triggering and reinforcing contextual factors
Possibilities for optimal management of conditions in order to minimise individual and social consequences
Design of social and economic arrangements that contribute to meaningful and sustainable participation of people with chronic conditions.
