Echoes of Ancestry: Unraveling History through Asmat Bis Poles

This study investigates the cultural and historical significance of Asmat bis poles, traditional totem statues from South Papua, Indonesia, many of which were taken to Western museums during Dutch colonial rule. Through provenance research, scientific analysis, and collaboration with Asmat artisans, the project explores their spiritual meanings, authenticity, and cultural evolution. The research aims to document and preserve bis pole traditions, promote ethical curation, and support potential repatriation discussions. By fostering collaboration between Indonesian researchers, Dutch museum experts, and the Asmat community, this study contributes to cultural heritage preservation and policy recommendations for sustaining Asmat traditions.
