Reinterpreting the Collections from the Kjøkkenmøddinger Sites of Aceh-North Sumatra

The Kjøkkenmøddinger sites of Aceh-North Sumatra, Indonesia, contain significant archaeological remains, including shell mounds, tools, and human fossils, which provide insight into the prehistoric coastal communities of the region. Many of these artifacts were excavated during the colonial era and are now housed in Dutch institutions, limiting access for Indonesian researchers. This project aims to inventory, analyze, and reinterpret these collections, comparing them with similar materials in Indonesia. By doing so, the research seeks to enhance historical understanding, support heritage preservation, and contribute to discussions on restitution. The study also fosters international collaboration and promotes inclusivity in archaeological research.
