Healthy living environment for a healthy weight - empowering migrant citizens to co-create environment responsive healthy lifestyles

Migrant citizens living in the Netherlands have a disproportionately higher burden of cardiometabolic diseases compared to other population groups. A complex interplay of factors including lifestyle habits, social factors and broader environmental factors contribute to this higher burden.
Efforts to develop culturally adapted measures engaging migrant groups are promising. However, to better address the burden of obesity among these population groups more knowledge is needed on the interaction of environmental characteristics and healthy lifestyle. Extending previous work on what matters to migrant groups concerning health behaviour and healthy environment, we will explore the interaction between the characteristics of the environment - where people live, work, and socialize – and ‘weight’ and what solutions could be co-designed that support healthy lifestyles – and healthy weight - within the context of the living environment. We will employ a co-design research framework and focus on ‘second generation’ migrants, whose parents originated from Suriname, Morocco, Turkey and the Dutch Caribbean.
We expect the project to result in a list of ideas or solutions co-designed with all stakeholders, of which at least one will have been piloted for its potential to support second generation migrant population groups in maintaining or achieving a healthy weight.
