Digitalizing Spice: Exploring The Hidden Stories of Nutmeg in Banda Neira Through Archives Collections in Rijksmuseum and Maritime Museum Rotterdam

This research project, titled "Digitalizing Spice: Exploring The Hidden Stories of Nutmeg in Banda Neira Through Archives Collections in Rijksmuseum and Maritime Museum Rotterdam," aims to uncover and document the rich cultural heritage of the Banda Islands, particularly focusing on nutmeg. The study addresses the historical and contemporary significance of nutmeg in Banda Neira, spanning pre-colonial, colonial, and post-independence periods. By employing a visual ethnography approach, the research seeks to bridge the gap between colonial narratives and indigenous perspectives, highlighting the local wisdom and cultural practices related to nutmeg. The project involves collaboration with various institutions, including the University of Indonesia, University of Banda Neira, and the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN). The findings will contribute to the preservation of Banda's cultural heritage and promote intercultural dialogue through the creation of digital visual collections and narrative interpretations.
