Advancing Dutch Circular Economy through Additive Manufacturing: Strategies for Repair and Remanufacturing using AM (Add-reAM)

The Add-reAM project is a scientifically driven initiative aimed at advancing the Dutch circular economy by integrating Additive Manufacturing (AM) into repair and remanufacturing processes. Traditional manufacturing models are resource-intensive, generating excessive waste and environmental harm, with products often prematurely discarded. This project seeks to generate the knowledge necessary to shift from these linear models to sustainable, circular practices that focus on repair, remanufacturing and reuse.
Several key challenges are identified, including the dominance of linear production models, insufficient regulatory frameworks and economic barriers, especially for small and medium-sized enterprises. Traditional manufacturing relies on costly, resource-heavy processes that often result in downcycling, which reduces material value. Add-reAM aims to address these gaps by demonstrating how AM can facilitate efficient part replacement and minimize inventory needs.
To overcome these barriers, the project will develop innovative solutions such as AI-driven decision-support tools that optimize material use, assess product conditions and enhance reverse logistics for circular supply chains. New business model will be created to demonstrate the economic viability of AM in remanufacturing, along with policy recommendations to support regulatory frameworks for remanufactured products.
The expected societal and environmental impacts include reducing material waste, lowering CO2 emissions and extending product lifecycles. Collaboration among academia, industry, policymakers, and society will be crucial to ensuring the successful adoption of AM technologies. The project will also develop training programs for future professionals in these areas.
The Add-reAM consortium will deliver a Technology Roadmap and a White Paper to guide AM integration, helping to meet the sustainability goals of the EU Green Deal. This initiative will position the Netherlands as a scientific and technological leader in AM-enabled circular manufacturing, reducing vulnerabilities related to global supply chains and deglobalization trends.
