Working Together on the Energy Transition in Cooperative Arrangements:
Joint Action for the Promotion of Grip and Engagement

The aim of the present research is to create new design principles for behavioral public policies to engage people with the energy transition. We will do so by introducing recent insights from psychological science on joint action into behavioral public policy so as to make cooperation in collective action arrangements work. Our research addresses the knowledge gap of how to engage large groups of people with the energy transition in formats that lend themselves for scaling up and at the same time gives people more grip on the transition. We will do so in collaboration with our prime societal partner Netherlands Scientific Council for Government Policy. The empirical part of the project consists of three work packages: WP1 will address whether a joint action paradigm is effective in generating engagement with the energy transition in existing groups of people and examine to what extent this approach is appreciated by the target group; WP2 will test the adoption potential of cooperative arrangements for the energy transition in a series of field experiments and examine to what extent this approach is feasible in public policy settings; WP3 will examine the diffusion potential of these arrangements and draw a roadmap for dissemination.
