Occupational exposures have been identified as a significant health risk. Presently, the exposure to chemical compounds in the Netherlands is estimated instead of monitored. Experimental data is lacking to check and validate chemical exposure management policies. One of the major challenges in monitoring occupational exposure is the non-uniform distribution of the hazardous gas substances indoors (e.g. at the workplace), which makes it difficult to assess the individual exposure and ensure worker safety. We propose to investigate a novel and innovative technological approach towards mapping the individual exposure that could have significant scientific and societal relevance and high potential for impact. The innovation consists of the combination of technologies, namely coherent open-path spectroscopy with a custom-made Fourier Transform Spectrometer and imaging methods that are used in traditional remote sensing, respectively. The result is the generation of the 3D map of the multispecies gas concentrations to determine the exposure. Remarkably, the project idea will be developed with and by taking into consideration the input from the societal related cooperation partners.
