Making Youth Knowledge Matter

A main goal for our route is to help disseminate and generate youth knowledge that matters to society. The three small projects that we propose, jointly support this goal. Subproject 1 focuses on knowledge utilization. We capitalize on existing knowledge infrastructure (i.e., the ‘Knowledge Roundabout’) to answer practice-based questions of professionals working in the broad youth domain, based on state of the art scientific knowledge. Subprojects 2 and 3 focus on knowledge generation on two urgent societal issues in which youth are centrally involved—multiculturalism and the climate crisis. These subprojects are conducted in accord with our route’s guiding principles: in collaborative teams of scientists and professionals, and with key input from youth through the entire research process. We generate new knowledge on youth with bicultural backgrounds, from the perspective that biculturality can bring important opportunities and strengths to adolescents (subproject 2). We also pioneer new techniques for sustainability education to children and adolescents, based on the perspective that there are alternatives to the traditional ‘doom and gloom’ messages surrounding climate change, and these alternatives are particularly motivating to young people (subproject 3). Together, these projects will significantly advance our route’s aim to co-create and share youth knowledge that matters.
