Quantum Inspire – the Dutch Quantum Computer in the Cloud

The quantum computer is coming! While prototypes of quantum computers exist in laboratories worldwide, they are not yet capable of solving relevant problems, but that era is approaching fast. Preparing society for use of this powerful but yet non-intuitive technology beyond the lab is essential. Therefore, this program will provide the first truly accessible interface between quantum computers and all future users. Exploiting the latest innovations in quantum computer hardware invented at QuTech, we will build a prototype quantum computer, develop an intuitive way to use it, and make it accessible online in the cloud.
We will enable stakeholders in government and industry to explore and expand the possibilities of quantum computing. At the same time we will empower the general public, specifically students, to run quantum algorithms over the internet on real hardware, and experience the capabilities and limitations of a quantum computer first-hand. The outcomes will be vital for the further development of the technology and pave the way for optimal real-world adoption.
To make quantum computers more accessible, the Quantum Inspire program will address fundamental research questions on every level from the physical control and calibration of large numbers of quantum bits to uncovering new intuitive interaction metaphors that allow users to mentally model the possibilities of quantum computers. It aims for fundamental advances in quantum computer architecture and the design of interfaces that support users in industry, government, and the general public. Finally, we will investigate the applications of quantum computers, focusing on near-term applications using existing (noisy) quantum computers.
The program relies on interdisciplinary and intersectoral collaboration involving a broad range of academic disciplines (physics, electrical engineering, computer science, industrial design) and applied expertise from hogescholen (HBO), industry, government, public organizations, and high-school education. Together we can prepare The Netherlands for the Quantum Revolution.
