Nano-conscious citizens: creating societal awareness for nanoscale brain research

In this project, our objective is to bridge the gap between nanoscale neuroscience research and public understanding while actively involving different societal stakeholders. The scientific aim of this project is to elucidate how activity-driven changes in the glycosylation patterns of synaptic CAMs influence synapse formation and the wiring of neuronal networks. Addressing this aim will also entail characterization of the structure and function of these proteins in their near-native environment, which is a critical challenge in the study of glycosylated neuronal proteins. Understanding the structure and function of such glycosylated proteins is crucial, as defects in the glycosylation pathways have been linked to various neurological defects (including Alzheimer’s and Congenital Disorders of glycosylation, for which effective (nano)medicine is not yet available. By investigating the glycosylation of neuronal proteins, we aim to generate new insights that could lead to future treatments. As a whole, this project will not only engage the public in understanding the significance and potential impact of nanoscale neuroscience research but also advance our scientific knowledge on this topic.
