Making the connections in food provisioning

The NWA-route ‘Sustainable production of safe and healthy food’ aims to analyze and catalyze change processes
in the agricultural food system. The route combines eight so-called Gamechangers (GCs). GCs focus on new basis
principles for future solutions and mobilize Dutch expertise that is available for strengthening and accelerating
scientific developments. This proposal contributes to four different GCs. Two subprojects make essential contributions
to research in the field of these GCs.
Central to the sub-projects is the connection between production and consumption of food. The nature of the
connection and the institutional embedding is highly contingent on context. Consequently, there is no silver bullet
for how to make the connection between production and consumption of food robust, environmentally friendly,
and inclusive. Both sub-projects engage with bottom-up initiatives and grassroots capacities shaping this
connection in different settings: the Netherlands, Kenya, and India.
The sub-projects share an interest in unravelling the arrangements and partnerships driving the
institutional design of sustainable food provisioning and appreciate self-organized and bottom-up forms of
organizing the connections between both sides of the agri-food chain.
