Accelerating Innovations in Team Sports: Crafting and Implementing a Knowledge Agenda

Team sports such as football, hockey, and handball require a combination of physical, tactical, technical, and mental skills. Unlike individual sports, where physical skills often determine success, team sport performance is multifactorial by nature. The current proposal builds on the collaboration between the University of Groningen/UMCG, VU, and NOC*NSF under the umbrella of Team Up!. This initiative facilitates knowledge exchange in national team sports. Sports scientists from seven team sports regularly meet to share experiences. In recent years, various projects have contributed to innovations in team sports, such as improved tactical analyses with trackingdata, smart sensors to measure physical load on the knee and hip, and an app to evaluate resilience. Due to rapid developments in technology and AI, and the need for multidisciplinary research, we propose to develop a shared national knowledge agenda. This agenda should ensure sustainable cooperation between team sports, knowledge institutions, companies, and government. This will accelerate innovations in team sports, with the aim of improving performance and increasing social impact. In this project, at least two pilots will be conducted that can serve as examples for future innovations in team sports.
