Wind power is an important source of renewable energy. Research into wind energy includes aspects such as the materials used for the turbine blades, aerodynamics including the noise generated, and the efficiency of the turbines themselves. There is a great social interest linked to questions in this cluster, especially when it comes to selecting sites for wind farms. Given the social issues surrounding noise and horizon pollution, for example, international cooperation for wind energy development in remote areas such as in international waters is an important direction. Here, transport, conversion and storage are relevant issues. At the same time, possible damage to the environment must be reduced. Small and low-noise turbines are needed to enable wind power generation in the urban environment. If small-scale wind energy is generated at several locations, smart solutions for flexible interaction with the power grid are necessary.

Connectivity:Technologically, most efficiency gains will come from scaling up turbines and farms. Both fundamental research and more efficient application can make gains in wind energy. For instance, through development and deployment of new materials, better understanding and higher predictability of wind patterns in front of and behind the turbine and thus better selection of wind areas. This is where big data comes into play. However, for the transition to sustainable energy supply, in addition to fundamental and technological breakthroughs, inter- and multidisciplinary research is needed to identify and solve the social, policy and institutional blockages.
