Is there life beyond our Earth?

Whether humanity is alone in the universe, or whether life exists elsewhere, is an ancient question. Thanks to new powerful telescopes, this question can finally be approached scientifically. For the first time, observations are possible of planets outside our solar system and of the formation of the molecules that form the building blocks of life. Dutch astronomers are world leaders in this field. Thanks to super-sharp images, they identify planetary systems in the making, in laboratories they mimic chemical processes in space. In the successful search for planets outside our solar system, called exoplanets, planets have been found where there could be liquid water, one of the conditions for the emergence of life like on Earth. Life of all kinds could betray itself by fingerprints of molecules, particulate matter and vegetation left behind in the radiation of an exoplanet. Here, the challenge is to distinguish the planet's faint light next to its bright parent star.

Connecting character

The search for extraterrestrial life involves fundamental questions about what life is and how it can be recognised; here the research touches on that of extremophilic organisms on Earth, among others. In this context, such diverse disciplines as fundamental life sciences, earth sciences and astrochemistry come together. Dutch astronomy is small but well organised and has a good position globally partly because of its good coordination and organisation. The equipment being developed to enable astronomical research into exoplanets and extraterrestrial life also leads to new possibilities for the high-tech industry in other application areas, creating new economic opportunities. The Dutch high-tech industry, both large companies and SMEs, is connected to these developments and will exploit opportunities for technological innovation. This will strengthen the economic position of this industry. This demand is in line with the Strategic Plan for Dutch Astronomy and ASTRONET's European roadmap for astronomy.
