How can we optimise our use of geothermal energy?

An urgent issue is how to meet our ever-growing energy needs while reducing CO2 emissions. One solution to this is the use of geothermal energy. Although geothermal energy in the Netherlands is not currently expected to solve the larger energy demand, it can be a solution for heating and cooling buildings.
To determine the actual potential of this form of energy, research is needed on the best methods to generate and transport geothermal energy. For instance, there are many questions about which materials or techniques to use to harness geothermal energy. Here, the cheaper extraction of geothermal energy also plays a major role: if it turns out to be an expensive form of energy, it will probably be difficult to apply it within the current market forces for supplying energy. In addition, research is needed into the effects of extraction and use on the earth, groundwater and the environment.

Connecting character

This question contains a large technological component. However, ecological, economic and social aspects also play a major role. This cluster thus ties in with questions about how human activities affect nature. Furthermore, this topic fits within the larger question on how to move towards a sustainable society. The extent to which geothermal energy will be used will also depend on the developments of other renewable energy options, such as wind or solar energy. Most questions in this cluster are very applied in nature and can therefore quickly have a social or economic impact. However, underlying these are fundamental questions about how our earth's soil and climate work.
